Happy Birthday, Posy Simmonds!

ladiesmakingcomics:

Posy Simmonds is the British cartoonist behind such works as Tamara Drewe and Gemma Bovery, as well as numerous strips from the Guardian.  And today is her 66th birthday!  Happy birthday, Posy!

I love the hell out of Tamara Drewe, both the story itself and Simmonds’ effortless blend of prose, illustration and narrative comics.  I keep telling Adam, we’ve got to experiment with that format …

‘Huntress’ #2 Cover by Guillem March [Exclusive Art]
Courtesy of DC Comics, ComicsAlliance brings you an exclusive first look at Guillem March’s cover for Huntress #2. On sale in November and featuring a script by Paul Levitz with interior artwork by Marcos To and John Dell, the issue continues the story of the Huntress in Italy, where she attempts to discover who put a price on her head and why.
Read more at ComicsAlliance.

I need a better look at this costume…

I love the bullseye target behind her and how her costume bleeds into it. I get the feeling we’re headed for a very intense story.

That is a fine portrayal of just maybe my second-favorite character (Helena Wayne being first).  What, no belly window?  I salute you, Mr. March …

Comics is wonderful.  Even when mainstream comics seem, themselves, entirely dead of inspiration or their original magic (I speak, of course, in theory), the spark lives in some amazingly talented artists outside the official monthly output.  Grant Morrison says superheroes are immortal (new book is a blast) and art like this absolutely proves it.

Adam & I talked briefly to the fine, fine Scott Morse at Trickster last month, and he was a gracious and engaging fellow (“Hey, wanna see these sketches David Mack and I did last night?”) to a pair of random con-goers.  Also, draws up a goddamned storm.

Spot illustrations Adam whipped out to go with a five-part writing exercise I posted called “Thresholds,” each tied to a 500-word vignette.

Market Monday
Madame Xanadu vol. 4: Extra-Sensory TP, includes art by Marley Zarcone, Laurenn McCubbin, Chrissie Zullo, Celia Calle, Marian Churchland and Amy Reeder

My favorite DC/Vertigo comic, the entire time it was being published.  Bought the loose issues, bought the trades, mailed the loose issues to Adam.  Matt Wagner’s storytelling was fantastic and ambitious, and the art of Amy Reeder, Michael Kaluta (!), Joelle Jones et. al. was always great.  Book deserved better, and I wish Wagner had had enough time to bring the story into the 21st century.
At least I’ve got my Vol. 1 TPB, with sketches/signatures by both Wagner and Reeder.  I don’t usually get too excited about that sort of thing, but … damn, y’know?
